Drake Wins Early Court Battle as Judge Rejects UMG’s Attempt to Block Discovery

Drake has scored a legal win in his lawsuit against Universal Music Group.
On April 2, 2025, Judge Jeannette Vargas denied UMG’s motion to pause all discovery in the case.
UMG argued that Drake's discovery requests included “highly commercially sensitive documents.”
These included executive compensation records and Kendrick Lamar’s record contract.
Judge Vargas ruled that UMG could object to specific requests but not block discovery altogether.
“I cannot find on that basis that a stay of discovery is warranted,” she said.
A separate hearing to decide if the entire case should be dismissed is set for June 30.
Drake’s attorney, Michael Gottlieb, responded to the decision, saying, “Now it’s time to see what UMG was so desperately trying to hide.”
